Welcome to the final week of the mini-series on bad advice.
In week one, we spoke about setting deadlines. Last week, passion and Ikigai… this week…
Well, I couldn’t decide.
There is a lot of bad advice or perceived common wisdom out there. Going for just three didn’t feel possible. Actually, it didn’t feel like enough fun.
Focusing on bad advice also felt too narrow. Some things came to mind that didn’t feel like “advice” per se, more as generally perceived or commonly accepted wisdom that deserves to be pointed out.
So with that being said, I’m delighted to share my ANTI-WISDOM, all-time top 5!
(Btw, obviously, finding your passion is #1, but, we’ve already covered that one.)
Let’s get into it…
5. Money Doesn’t Buy Happiness
One of my favourite quotes is from Coco Chanel.
The best things in life are free. The second best things are very, very expensive.
Money might not buy complete happiness, and if you can’t be happy with a coffee, you won’t be happy with a yacht. But I’m happy with a coffee, and I’d be even happier with a yacht.
4. Good Things Come To Those Who Wait
I actually don’t even know what this advice or wisdom applies to? I just remember my mum saying this to me when I was being an impatient and annoying little shit.
Good things don’t come to those who wait. Good things come to those who go and get them. Respectfully.
3. Live Each Day As If It Were Your Last
We’re getting into the good ones now.
If you told me that tomorrow was my last day on the planet, I would probably not go to sleep tonight, tell everyone how I really felt, and probably not brush my teeth.
How is that good for anyone?
2. Shoot For The Moon, Even If You Miss, You’ll Land In The Stars
First of all, let’s acknowledge that the stars are much, much further away than the moon, so missing the moon would leave you nowhere near any stars either.
But even ignoring that, sometimes setting ultra-high goals without realistic steps leaves you stressed and questioning your abilities.
Finally…
1. Just Be Yourself
Unless you’re at home with the curtains drawn, just don’t.
What I watched this week…
I wonder if we will see anything this measured and gracious in the coming days and weeks…
Thanks for reading, see you next week ✌🏻❤️
